Moc Chau, Son La

Moc Chau is 200km west of Hanoi and famed for its fertile land making it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the north. In particular, it is known for the blossom season, tea fields and waterfalls. The climate here is milder compared to other places in the north. Even in summer it can be a pleasant temperature. It is the most beautiful in the winter as the white plum blossoms are in season.

Getting to Moc Chau with Motorbike

Although you could reach Moc Chau directly from Hanoi in about 5 hours, it is more common, and also more recommended, to reach Moc Chau the longer way round. Mai Chau and Pu Luong are both located South East and only 60km – 110km away. Connecting these is the AH13. Although it is a major road, it is a nice drive with some good views overlooking the valley below. If you prefer a quieter path then there is a small road just to the north which goes through the valley.

120km to the north is Ta Xua which can be reached with a ferry over the Da River. This is not only a quiet road to take but putting the motorbike on a ferry is an experience in itself.

To the north west is Son La city. The road heading here is a major road and the only road taking trucks and buses in this direction. Although busy, it is quite large so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable to ride. If you have the time, then heading to Ta Xua before Son La city is always recommended.

Where to Stay

Moc Chau has 3 main locations to stay when visiting. In the town they have many homestays, nha nghi and hotels. There is a price range and comfort to find something suitable for everyone in town. This location has the most food option nearby that are easy to reach.

To the north of the town in the valleys with tea fields, plum trees and more are also small homestays. They sacrifice convenience for the beautiful nature. Waking up here is a special feeling compared to the town.

The 3rd option is the Moc Chau Island Resort, which for most bikers will not be the answer. But if you are heading to the bridge or wanting a little comfort and luxury during your trip then it just might be.

Tea Fields

The tea fields in Moc Chau are one of the most famous attractions. Located in the town itself as well as in the north of the town. To visit the ones in the town is more convenient as you will be passing by them when you are entering or leaving. They have been setup into for photo opportunities with the tea plants spelling out Moc Chau and in a heart shape.

Further north are much larger tea fields with a more natural feel. There are homestays in this area so you can make up for this unique view.

Na Ka Plum Valley

Around the lunar new year the plum trees blossom, with stunning white leaves all through the Na Ka valley. This brings life to a photo of the area where, when out of season, the landscape is barren. The blossom is short lived, lasting just a few weeks so timing is everything.

How short lived and drastic the transformation is, adds to the beauty of the spectacle.

World’s Largest Glass Bridge

Located as part of the Moc Chau Island Resort is the Bach Long Glass Bridge. This is the World’s Longest Glass Bridge extending over the valley far below, this is not for those scared of heights.

You can just visit the bridge instead of the whole resort for between 550k – 650k vnd depending on the day of the week. Given the location and the time it takes to reach the bridge from within the resort, this can become a whole day visit.

Nang Tien & Chieng Khoa Waterfalls

Those 2 waterfalls are within 2km of each other, 20km to the east of Moc Chau town. There are both stunning natural waterfalls which you can visit for just 10k – 20k vnd.

The waterfalls have a number of different levels with the pools at the bottom offering rafts to go out right under the falls for a photo. Both are worth a visit, especially during the summer months when a refreshing swim after a hot bike ride is much needed after a warm ride.

Dai Yem Waterfall

Dai Yen Waterfall is less natural with more infrastructure nearby offering drinks and food. While this makes it an easier visit it will be less appealing to others.

The falls are much wider than the other 2 waterfalls mentioned here, with walking platforms to easily navigate around the area. The ticket to visit the waterfall here is 100k vnd.

Bat Cave

The Bat Cave is very close to the city of the town although it is a hike uphill to get to the entrance to the cave. Here you will find a large cave with a small temple inside. It is very well lit, with stairs making it easy to access. There is just a small entrance fee to visit here.

Hang Tau Village

This remote village is hidden some 15km out of town in a small valley. This village offers a glimpse into the natural way of life of the H’Mong people. Without electricity or the internet it is like days past.

There are about 20 houses here that survive with a farming way of life, whilst in recent years it has become more famous amongst tourists who want to see an old way of life in a beautiful setting.

Summary

Moc Chau is one of hidden gems in north Vietnam, whilst it is well known for Vietnamese tourism there are still few foreigners visiting this town. For many of the routes in the north you will pass by and depending on the time of year it can be a stunning place to visit, either for the refreshing swim in the waterfalls or to witness the blossoms.

To take in all Moc Chau offer you will need a least a couple of days. But one night will still allow many sights given how close Mai Chau, Ta Xua and Son La are located. Many people pass through without stopping and miss out of this beautiful area.
