In Vietnam for any bike over 50cc you need either a Vietnamese motorbike license or a International Drivers Permit with motorbike stamp and a domestic motorbike license. If you do not have either of these then legally you are not able to ride. 

That is why we offer the Sym Wave 50cc in Ha Giang so that you can legally ride the Ha Giang loop without a license. 

There are regular police checkpoints in Ha Giang to ensure that everyone is riding with the correct license. If you are not then you can be fined by the police (3mil vnd each time) or maybe not allowed to leave the city to even start the loop. 

The Sym Wave 50cc means that you are riding legally, the police will not fine you, and you should still be covered by your travel insurance. 

Is 50cc enough for the Ha Giang Loop?

Yes it is enough power for 1 person to do the Ha Giang Loop. These bikes are tuned up to get the most out of them. Being semi auto and having the gears mean you have more power in the mountains compared to an automatic. 

Just keep the weight down which means just 1 person and a small bag. You can leave the rest of your luggage in our shop in Ha Giang when you are renting. 

Only experienced with automatics?

The semi auto is very easy to learn for most people. There is no clutch but the bike still has gears so no stalling. 

In the mountains you can use the engine braking downhill as an additional way of slowing yourself and if you are struggling uphill then you can use the lower gears. 

We will make sure that you are ok riding before you rent with a short lesson. 

Tour vs Bike Rental?

If you are experienced with bikes but are just missing the correct license then you could just rent the bike and go by yourself or with a group of friends and explore Ha Giang on your own. We will help you with a route and advice on the way. 

No experience then it is recommended you join one of our own self drive tours. You can still ride your own bike without the risk of a fine but you will have the comfort knowing you are with one of our guides and can meet other people on the tour.
