Na Hang, Tuyen Quang

Na Hang, Tuyen Quang

Na Hang is a small district town in Tuyen Quang province, near to the famous Ha Giang Loop. The town itself is unremarkable, but it is the gateway to one of the most underrated natural areas in northern Vietnam — a vast reservoir lake surrounded by limestone karst peaks that has earned comparisons to Ha Long Bay. For riders planning a Na Hang motorbike trip, it sits in a genuinely useful geographic position in the north: it connects the northeast (Bao Lac, Cao Bang) with the northwest (Ha Giang) and links easily to Ba Be Lake to the east. It can anchor a dedicated two-night stop or serve as an overnight stop on a larger northern loop. The best time to visit is from October to April when the weather is dry and visibility across the lake is at its clearest. Although it will be cold in the winter and the water will be very inviting during a hot summers day.

Getting to Na Hang with a Motorbike

Na Hang is central enough to the northern mountains that it can be approached from almost any direction, which is part of what makes it useful for route planning.

  • From Hanoi: The most direct route is around 300km via Tuyen Quang city, following QL2 north and then heading up through Chiem Hoa.
  • From Ba Be Lake: Around 80–90km on winding mountain roads. This is one of the more scenic connections in the northeast.
  • From Bao Lac / Cao Bang: To the northeast, there is Cao Bang city and Bao Lac town. It takes around 4-5 hours with Bao Lac having some special mountain passes futher East.
  • From Ha Giang City: To the northwest, around 130km through back roads via Bach Ngoc in Vi Xuyen district — a quieter, more scenic road that is highly recommended.
  • From Thach Ba: To the southwest, the distance is around 100–120km through Yen Bai province.

Na Hang’s position means it works equally well as a standalone detour or as part of a large northern loop connecting the east and west without needing to pass through Ha Giang city or the main loop roads.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Na Hang town is basic — guesthouses and small local hotels dominate, with prices to match. The town is functional as a base but not particularly atmospheric on its own.

A better option if available is to stay at a homestay closer to the lake and the boat docks, where the surroundings are considerably more appealing than the town centre. Ask your accommodation to help arrange the boat trip for the following day — this is the easiest way to book. Alternatively, you can head directly to the docks and arrange it there on the morning.

limestone karst from na hang lake

Na Hang Lake

The lake is the main reason to come here. Formed by a hydroelectric dam on the Gam River, it covers around 8,000 hectares of water surface surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks and dense forest. The comparison to Ha Long Bay is overused across northern Vietnam but in Na Hang’s case it is genuinely apt — the scale of the karst scenery rising from the still water is impressive.

A short boat trip on the lake is worth doing even if you are not taking the full tour to Khuoi Nhi Waterfall. Even an hour out on the water gives a completely different perspective on the landscape and the surrounding mountains.

Boat Trip — Khuoi Nhi Waterfall and Coc Vai Rock

The full boat trip takes you deeper into the reservoir to visit two highlights that are only accessible by water. Khuoi Nhi is a waterfall set back from the lake, reached after winding through the karst landscape by boat. Coc Vai is a striking rock pillar rising from the water — a natural landmark that has become one of the most photographed spots in the area.

The trip can be booked through your guesthouse or homestay the evening before, or arranged directly at the boat docks on the morning. Expect to pay around 1,200,000 VND for the boat regardless of the number of people. Start early to make the most of the light on the water and to avoid the midday heat on the return leg.

Ruộng Bậc Thang Hồng Thái — Hong Thai Rice Terraces

A short ride from Na Hang town, the Hong Thai rice terraces are one of the less-visited terrace destinations in northern Vietnam. It is to the East so easy to reach when heading to or from Cao Bang or Ba Be lake.

Home to Dao and H’Mong communities, the terraces wind along the hillsides and change significantly with each season — flooded and reflective in May to June, dense green through the summer, and turning gold during the September to October harvest. Winter brings low mist that settles into the valleys and stays until mid-morning.

Because Hong Thai sits well off the main tourist circuit, the villages here are quiet and the agricultural pace of life is easy to observe. You can ride to the viewpoint directly by motorbike, making this an easy addition to a morning or afternoon when you are not out on the lake.

Hang Thủng Bạch Ngọc — On the Road to Ha Giang

If you are continuing from Na Hang to Ha Giang city via the back road through Vi Xuyen district, the route passes near Hang Thủng Bạch Ngọc — a cave set into the side of a limestone mountain range that has a large natural hole visible through the rock. The mountain itself makes for a striking sight from the road, and the cave can be reached on foot from the base.

The cave system has two main chambers with four branches and takes 5–6 hours to explore fully. It is completely unlit with no phone signal inside, so torches and proper footwear are essential. This means for most people you will be visit the entrance.

This is not worth a detour if you are heading south or east from Na Hang. But if Ha Giang city is your next stop via the back road, it makes a natural and interesting point to stop and take in the view, with the option to explore further if you have the time and the right gear.

Local Tip — Corn Wine

Na Hang’s local corn wine is made using highland corn and herbal yeast from over 20 types of medicinal plants. If you are offered a glass by locals at your homestay or guesthouse, it is well worth accepting — it is a genuine regional speciality and a good way to spend an evening after a day on the lake. A different kind of happy water is always worth trying if you are brave enough.

Summary

Na Hang is the kind of place that rewards riders who take the time to stay rather than pass through. The town itself is nothing special, but the lake, the boat trip and the rice terraces make a compelling combination for one or two nights. It fills a genuinely useful gap in the northern touring map — sitting between Ba Be, Cao Bang, Ha Giang and Thac Ba in a way that few other stops do. Riders who want to link the east and west of the north without doubling back through more trafficked roads will find Na Hang a natural and worthwhile anchor point. For the best experience, plan the boat trip for your first full day and use any remaining time to ride out to the rice terraces or simply spend time on the lake.

A two-night stay is ideal. One night is workable if you arrive early and move efficiently, but the boat trip alone takes most of a day and the terraces deserve at least a short ride out to be worthwhile.

The Honda XR150L or CB150X are both well suited to the roads around Na Hang, including the back road approach from Ha Giang. You can check our full bike range here.
