Dalat, Lam Dong

Often called “the city of eternal spring,” Dalat sits high in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, around 300km north of Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to its elevation, Dalat enjoys cool temperatures year-round, making it a welcome escape from the tropical heat found elsewhere in southern Vietnam. The city is known for its winding mountain roads, waterfalls, pine forests, flower farms, and distinctive architecture, which together make it one of the most popular destinations for both Vietnamese travelers and motorbike riders.

Getting to Dalat with motorbike

Dalat is a natural stop when riding between Ho Chi Minh City and central Vietnam. The most common approach from the south follows QL20, often with a break at Nam Cat Tien National Park, making the journey manageable at around 180km in a day.

One of the standout rides in southern Vietnam is the route northeast to Nha Trang, which takes you over the stunning Khanh Le Pass. This section descends dramatically from the highlands toward the coast and is widely regarded as one of the best motorbike roads in the south. The full ride to Nha Trang is roughly 140km and combines sweeping corners with mountain and jungle views.

For those heading further inland, Buon Ma Thuot lies around 200km north along QL27. While this road is less dramatic than the coastal route, it is quieter and still offers enjoyable riding through coffee plantations and highland scenery.

Where to Stay

Dalat offers accommodation for every budget and travel style. Hostels and hotels are concentrated around the city center, making them convenient for restaurants, cafés, and nightlife. Resorts are generally found on the outskirts, where there is more space, countryside views, and a quieter atmosphere.

Homestays are scattered throughout the city and surrounding hills, offering everything from simple family homes to more boutique-style stays. Choosing where to stay largely depends on what you plan to do – waterfalls and nature are mostly outside the city, while many of Dalat’s architectural highlights are located centrally.

Crazy House

Dalat’s architecture is unlike anywhere else in Vietnam, and nowhere is this clearer than at the Crazy House. Part guesthouse and part art installation, it features surreal designs, twisting staircases, and maze-like walkways. Even if you don’t stay the night, it is well worth a visit.

Maze Bar

Just nearby, the Maze Bar continues the city’s love of unconventional design. More than just a place for drinks, it is an interconnected network of narrow corridors, staircases, and themed rooms that eventually lead to a rooftop garden with views over Dalat.

Waterfalls & Canyoning

The surrounding countryside is filled with waterfalls, making Dalat one of the best places in Vietnam for nature lovers. Popular spots include Datanla, Pongour, Prenn, and Elephant Waterfall, some close to the city and others requiring longer rides – another reason why having a motorbike in Dalat is essential.

For adventure seekers, canyoning is a major highlight. This involves abseiling down waterfalls and natural rock faces, with Datanla Waterfall being the most popular location. Tours can be booked easily in town or through hostels.

Alpine Coaster

At Datanla you’ll also find the Alpine Coaster, a thrilling ride through the forest. The newer coaster stretches over 2.4km, with riders controlling their own speed, making it just as enjoyable for adrenaline lovers as it is for those wanting a scenic descent.

Night Market

Dalat’s night market comes alive after sunset and is one of the best places to experience local life. While it runs all day, evenings are when the atmosphere peaks, with street food, warm snacks, and crowds filling the area.

Truc Lam Zen Monastery

For a more peaceful experience, Truc Lam Zen Monastery sits above Tuyen Lam Lake, surrounded by pine forest. One of the largest Buddhist monasteries in Vietnam, it offers a calm contrast to the city below. You can reach it by motorbike or take a cable car from the edge of town.

Bao Dai Palace 3

History lovers will enjoy Bao Dai Palace 3, once used by Vietnam’s last emperor. The palace blends French and Vietnamese architectural styles and gives insight into life during the final years of the monarchy.

Linh Phuoc Temple

Another unique stop is Linh Phuoc Temple, often called the Scrap Pagoda due to its construction from recycled materials like glass and porcelain. It is famous for its dragon mosaics, record-breaking statues, and the striking tunnel depicting the 18 levels of hell, illustrating Buddhist teachings on karma.

Summary

Dalat is widely considered the highlight of southern Vietnam and one of the most rewarding destinations in the country for motorbike travelers. From mountain roads and waterfalls to flower farms, temples, and quirky architecture, there is an incredible variety of things to see and do.

To truly experience Dalat, a motorbike is essential, and at least two full days are recommended – though even that can feel rushed given how spread out the attractions are. Whether you’re riding north, south, or simply exploring the highlands, Dalat is a destination that should not be missed.
