Using Google Maps for Motorbike Travel in Vietnam
(Highways, Toll Roads & Ferries Explained)
When traveling through Vietnam by motorbike, navigation isn’t just about knowing your route — it’s about knowing which roads you can and can’t take.
While speed limits and red lights are straightforward, Vietnam has expressways that motorbikes aren’t allowed on, and toll roads that can be confusing for new riders.
Here’s everything you need to know to navigate safely and confidently using Google Maps.
Google Maps

When it comes to motorbike travel in Vietnam, Google Maps is by far the most reliable navigation tool.
Unlike Apple Maps or Maps.me, Google Maps offers:
- The most up-to-date road network
- Accurate information about homestays, petrol stations, restaurants, and attractions
- Street View and 360° images in many parts of the country – perfect for checking road conditions ahead
While there are some great motorbike-specific travel apps, even those don’t have the same coverage or accuracy in rural Vietnam. The best option is to use them alongside Google Maps for extra insights.
Phone Mounts for Easy Navigation
Every Style Motorbikes rental comes with a secure phone mount, making navigation simple and safe while you ride.
- Larger bikes come with vibration-dampened mounts
- Premium models include wireless charging while you ride
So you can keep your phone charged and visible the entire trip — no juggling directions at red lights!

Highways & Expressways (CT Roads)
Vietnam’s road network has expanded rapidly in recent years, with many new expressways (CT roads) connecting major cities.
These roads are strictly off-limits for motorbikes – only cars and trucks are allowed.
You’ll see clear signage at entrances banning motorbikes, but Google Maps helps prevent mistakes.
Tip:
- If your Google Maps app has the motorbike mode, use it! It automatically avoids restricted highways.
- If not, use the car mode and select “Avoid Highways” in route options.
This ensures you stay on legal and scenic routes that are perfect for motorbike travel.

Toll Roads
You’ll see toll booths throughout Vietnam, but here’s the good news – motorbikes don’t pay tolls.
There’s usually a side lane where you can ride through for free.
Some toll roads are part of expressways (which you can’t use), but others are open to motorbikes and completely toll-free.
Tip:
Don’t bother turning on “Avoid Toll Roads” in Google Maps – it’s unnecessary for riders in Vietnam.
Ferries in Vietnam
Ferries aren’t common in Vietnam, but you’ll come across a few river crossings on scenic routes. These short ferry rides can be:
- A fun local experience
- A convenient shortcut compared to taking a longer bridge route
Ferries usually run all day (weather permitting) but not at night – though you shouldn’t be riding after dark anyway! They’re cheap, fast, and easy to find on Google Maps.
Style Motorbikes routes include one main ferry we regularly recommend – plus an optional bamboo ferry for the adventurous!
For larger ferries (like those to Phu Quoc or Cat Ba Island), schedules, prices, and operations are well organized and clearly posted.
Tip:
Don’t always select “Avoid Ferries” on Google Maps – some are worth taking for the experience!
